Coral Highway now open

The new Coral Highway / Autopista del Coral was opened 9th August 2012. This new highway links Punta Cana airport to La Romana town, La Romana airport and La Romana resorts in the south, reducing the journey time from 90 minutes to 45. It bypasses the towns of Otra Banda and Higuey and makes for a quicker, smoother, easier, stress free drive! It’s also pleasantly quite scenic as it cuts through sugar cane fields, farming land and severaltectonic uplifts in the terrain.

Renting a car to visit the fishing village of Bayahibe, for example, is now an option for almost any driver as the route is so much simpler and safer than before.
Incidentally, new road signs have recently been erected all over the south and east of the island – even the old road to and through Higuey is now signposted. Better late than never!

Taxi fares from Punta Cana airport to La Romana/Bayahibe resorts are not expected to be reduced – the going rate for taxis based at Punta Cana airport is 120$US one way, per taxi for up to 5 people.

Toll booths will be added in the future but for now there is no toll fee! The fee will be included in a taxi fare.

The Coral Highway starts 2 minutes west of Punta Cana airport. See our Punta Cana Map Page.

It takes 45 minutes to reach Bayahibe/La Romana and Dominicus resorts (35 minutes on the highway + 8 minutes on road to Bayahibe/Dominicus)

To reach the Coral Highway from Bavaro/Punta Cana resorts:
10 minutes from Puntacana beach
12 minutes from Cap Cana
15 minutes from Cabeza de Toro
25 minutes from Bavaro
30 minutes from Cortecito
65 minutes from Uvero Alto

The section bypassing La Romana town is not finished yet. It will eventually join the highway to Santo Domingo.
