Santo Domingo 2013, Capital Destination – Travel Trade Caribbean

Santo Domingo.-The Santo Domingo 2013, Capital Destination event took place October 14 and 15 at the Renaissance Jaragua Hotel, sponsored by the Ministry of Tourism, to give a boost to that city’s position in the tourist market.

The fair, organized by the Association of Hotels of Santo Domingo (AHSD), was attended by 140 tour operators, travel agents and journalists from 20 countries in addition to featuring a trade exhibition with 21 hotels, five airlines and different tour operators. A gastronomic festival and a tour of bars and restaurants in the heart of the Colonial City of Santo Domingo were held parallel to the event.

During the inaugural ceremony, Eduardo Reple, president of AHSD, defined the capital city as a versatile and dynamic destination that can become “the door to the Americas,” “using the comparative advantage of the country’s location in the very center of the Caribbean and having the necessary air connections with the rest of America and Europe.”

The hotelier explained that at present the principal source of visitors to Santo Domingo is the corporative and business tourism market, but there are other segments that can be exploited.

“Santo Domingo has the largest Colonial City in the Caribbean, declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, which represents a treasure of Dominican culture,” he said, recalling the ambitious tourist restructuring an embellishing plan that, with an investment of more than 30 million dollars, is being executed by the Ministry of Tourism in this historic center where the First City of the Americas was founded.

He described Santo Domingo as a great metropolis – cultural, gastronomic, commercial and entertainment capital, of fashion and major events. He recalled its film, theater and jazz festivals and the art exhibitions; its large commercial malls and its four world-quality golf courses; its extensive offer of restaurants and other entertainment locales for all pockets; as well as its capacity to host large congresses, among others
